Greens in European Parliament call for end to Gaza devastation.

EU cannot remain passive in the face of devastating situation in Gaza
Commenting on the ongoing conflict in Palestine and Israel, Greens/EFA co-presidents Rebecca Harms and Philippe Lamberts said: "The dramatic conflict in Gaza must stop immediately. We condemn the bombing and shelling of hospitals, schools, and other civilian areas, with the resulting deaths of a shocking number of Palestinian women and children, as reported by Human Rights Watch. These civilians can go nowhere in order to escape the violence as Gaza is under constant siege. There can be no justification for the disproportionate and continued violence against civilians in the most densely populated area of the world. The Israeli Defence Forces must immediately and fully respect international humanitarian law. We also condemn the continued firing of indiscriminate rockets into Israel by Hamas and other groups. "We welcome the upcoming UN Commission of Inquiry concerned with all violations of inter…

Green Party leadership elections: How to vote!

Image
Each summer all Green Party of England and Wales members are sent a ballot form to elect members of our Executive (GPEX).

Executive members serve for two years.

Turnout is often low and given that Green Party membership has increased from 14,000 in January to 17,000 this June, the system may be confusing and especially so to new members

1.  The ballot forms come with the next issue of Green World the Green Party magazine, which should be out in the next week or so......the envelope is sometimes thrown out by members who think it is junk mail, so look out for it!

2.  Ballots have to be in by the end of August.

3. The vote is transferable, so rather than Westminster style ticks, number the candidates in order of preference from 1 downwards.

4.  Some posts are contested by just one candidate, but you can vote for Re-open nominations (RON) if you don't like the candidates on offer.

5.  A book of candidates statements is included so you can get an idea of what candidates for the diff…

'a fun, insightful journey into the lives of Elinor and Vincent Ostrom'

Image
John M. Anderies who worked with Elinor Ostrom has written a very generous review of my book about her work, 'The Sustainable Economics of Elinor Ostrom', unlike my book, which I am sad to say is an expensive tome (use the library system), the review is free and part of the intellectual commons.

The original review can be found here in the Commons Journal

Book Review Wall, Derek 2014. The Sustainable Economics of Elinor Ostrom: Commons, Contestation and Craft. New York & London: Routledge. Reviewed by: John M. AnderiesSchool of Human Evolution and Social Change, Arizona State University, USA. When I was asked to take on this review, I was hesitant at first. If I agree to review a book, I want to bring to the task my most open mind. Having worked with Elinor Ostrom for a decade, I was afraid I would find it difficult to have a fresh look and find new ideas in a book with the title “The Sustainable Economics of Elinor Ostrom.” I accepted nonetheless and when I started r…

Green Party supports demonstration to end ground war in Gaza

Image
Derek Wall, International Coordinator of the Green Party of England and Wales, calls for all Green Party members to support saturday's national demonstration against the invasion of Gaza by Israel.

'Gaza is effectively a huge open air prison.  Civilian casualties are accelerating.  Greens always support non violent solutions and negotiations, conflict can only be ended if Palestinians are treated with justice and dignity. The bombing and ground offensive must stop.  While Greens reject violence on both sides, we are also aware of the vast imbalance between the two sides and the fact that the media and most British political parties fail to defend Palestine's peoples'.

The Green Party has today called for an immediate end of the Israeli attack on Gaza, and for the British government to apply all possible pressure to achieve that end.
Natalie Bennett, Green Party leader, said: “With the death toll in Gaza soaring past 250, with many of them civilians, including many …
